Obesity is typically caused by an imbalance between energy consumption and energy expenditure. Studies have shown that the abundance of Akkermansia is negatively correlated with body weight in humans. The analysis of gut microbiota in feces showed that overweight children had lower Akkermansia concentrations compared with the lean children. Studies also showed that the abundance of Akkermansia bacteria in the gut was negatively correlated with healthy fasting blood glucose levels and body mass index (BMI).
Since there is an inverse correlation between the abundance of Akkermansia and metabolic diseases, several experimental studies have been used to demonstrate this probiotic as a tool for treating these diseases. Similarly, some findings indicate that Akkermansia adheres to the intestinal epithelium and strengthens the integrity of this gut layer suggesting that it contributes to the integrity of the intestinal barrier; thereby reducing “leaky gut” which leads to inflammatory conditions.
